John of God

A boy, not much older than eight years old, was travelling through the Brazilian countryside with his mother and warned her: it will rain so hard, but so hard, that many of the homes around here will be destroyed in less than one hour. Childish talk? Silly game? When in doubt, the woman decided to listen to the boy and look for shelter away from her brother’s home where they were going for a visit: his was one of the roofs João said would come down. The walls collapsed and João’s story started to travel into the country by word of mouth.

“Faith is believing

in that which you can’t see”

Spiritual patient at Casa Dom Inácio de Loyola

He says he’s always been by God’s side. Devoted to Saint Rita of Cascia from an early age, he believes in the eyes of the greater being that sees all, in the healing power of its force. He started channeling doctors’ entities before the age of ten and he slowly became the body and the passage for the consultations of those who sought healing in Spiritist centers. Inácio de Loyola is a constant presence in João Teixeira de Farias’s days. At the house bearing the saint’s name – one that also is at the front of an important branch in Brazilian spirituality – João falls into an awaken doze so that other energies may rise.

In 1978, following many trips to see and cure patients, he started receiving warnings: he should find a piece of land in Abadiânia, in the state of Goiás. This city, with approximately fifteen thousand inhabitants and located about eighty kilometers away from the capital, Brasília, is where he should build a house in close proximity to a waterfall. Inside the walls painted blue and white like the sky, João should resume his mission and help thousands of people from all over the world on their paths to cure and freedom.

“Spirituality is a connection

with all things on the planet”

Volunteer at Casa Dom Inácio de Loyola

Now past his seventy-six years, João de Deus sees hundreds of patients every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: many are the languages, feelings, and stories that reach Abadiânia, now converted into one of the main backdrops for faith in the world. Everything in that place is about Casa de Dom Inácio: inns are prepared to give out all the necessary instructions, street signs only lead to one place, even the colors on people’s clothes. The purity and respectability of white is the fabric for many bodies: a clear sign that the hierarchies of the contemporary world have no place there. For the entities, all are equal in power and pain: no other currency will be accepted.

Full-fledged silence, relaxed arms and legs: the open body. With photos of family members in their hands, people must say if this is a first visit, a returning patient, or a spiritual surgery; get in the right queue and wait for their turn. Soon, there will be individual contact with one of the medical entities in João’s body, which belongs to God: they may ask questions, they may talk, they may write a prescription for the patient to collect right there, at the house. For every case, he recommends: you must also maintain your traditional medicine treatment, because doctors are missionaries – sent by the same God – to treat the matter. For every treatment, including surgical, rendition and faith are the most important procedures.

“Cuts aren’t required

for the spiritual surgeries.

What causes the disease is in the spirit,

and affects the body”

João de Deus

If the patient requests and the entities agree, the surgeries are performed on the spot, and most of them are also spiritual. In exceptional cases: scissors and threads can attest for bleeding cuts and, generally, objects extracted from the body. For every type of treatment: there’s no appointment, no charge for the consultation.

Gratitude is one of the most abundant of the energies in the atmosphere surrounding on the top mediums in Brazil and around the world. Cancer, deafness, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis: people from all over the world, doctors specialized in so many things… there are thousands and thousands of reports on successful treatments. And, while the queue lengthens and more people arrive in Abadiânia or any other place in the world where the semi-illiterate Brazilian has been, João insists: the cure and all the glory belong, just does he, to God.
